I recently came across this documentary called Way Beyond Weight and I just had to share it (hat tip to Andreas Eenfeldt).
It is about childhood obesity and includes multiple interviews with obese children, parents, doctors and nutritionists.
Is Big Food The New Big Tobacco?
Some say that the big food companies are just as bad as the tobacco companies used to be, when the heat turned on smoking as a cause of lung cancer.
They are using similar tactics of marketing, deception and political influence.
But I personally don’t think the food companies are as bad as the tobacco companies.
They are much, much worse.
Big tobacco marketed their products primarily towards adults.
But that’s not the case with big food. They market their products aggressivelytowards children… and sugar is just as unhealthy as cigarettes.
Nutrition Organizations Are in Bed With The Junk Food Companies
The junk food companies sponsor nutrition organizations like the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) – the “world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.”
They even provide educational material to them where dietitians are taught that sugar-sweetened beverages are okay for children.
Don’t believe me? Read this shocking report about the massive conflict of interest between nutrition organizations and the junk food companies.
It’s also right here on the AND’s official website.
This is the reason large nutrition organizations like the ADA and AND tell us that sugar and junk foods “have their place” in a balanced diet.
That is nonsense. There is NO PLACE for junk food in the diet of someone who is obese and it certainly has no place in a child’s diet either.
This stuff only causes harm.
